If you were ever curious about them, here is your chance to learn about Hashtags and the unspoken 'rules' around them. Hashtags made their first appearance back in 2007 on Twitter, with the very first being #barcamp by Chris Messina. Weird right? It wasn’t until 2010 that Hashtags gained popularity thanks again to Twitter, when they introduced a "Trending Topics" page to their platform. As their popularity grew Instagram picked Hashtags up and added the feature to their site in 2011 and all other social media platforms began to follow suit with its growing popularity.
Flash forward to today Hashtags are everywhere, but what is their true purpose, should you be using them, and what is their unspoken rule? To explain it simply, Hashtags are used to group things together to make yourself easily searchable in a certain topic. For example if you had an opinion on a tending topic such as an upcoming election you could included a few hashtags (#election #presidentialelection #Vote) to the end of your post to add your post to the linked topic. You could even create your very own Hashtag for your business for your clients to use!
If you’re wondering if you should be adding them to your posts the answer is, Absolutely! Hashtags are a great to grow your page and find others who feel the same way or are looking for a page just like yours! However, there is an unspoken rule when it comes to the Hashtag.. Always remember there is such a thing as too much! You should never include more than 10 Hashtags on a post. The ideal amount is between 5-10 per post, any more and your posts could be viewed as spam by the platform or by the individual viewer. Here are some great sites that can help you create Hashtags and show you the top trending ones; hastagify.me, hastags.org, dispalypurposes.com, best-hastags.com. Have fun #Hashin!
